One Site For The Entire Federal Government
On September 29, the White House launched America.gov, an AI-powered site that brings 29,000 federal websites together in one place.
Right now, it answers questions. Ask anything in plain language and get official answers from every federal agency at once. Starting in 2027, it will let people take action: enroll in Medicare, renew a passport, check on a student loan, and track the status of every request in one place.
The White House's headline example was a newlywed changing her last name. Today that means weeks of forms across multiple agencies. On America.gov, she'll upload her marriage certificate once, and every federal agency gets updated.
It Stops At The State Line
Here's the detail that's easy to miss. Once the federal name change is done, America.gov gives the user a checklist of links to finish the process with their state.
That's because so much of what residents rely on runs through states, not federal agencies:
- Driver's licenses and vehicle registration
- Home energy rebates and weatherization programs
- Professional licenses and certifications
- Workforce training and state administered benefits
The federal government built one front door. At the state level, residents still get a list of links. What they find when they click on yours matters more than ever.
The Bar Just Moved
Once people can update every federal agency with a single upload, a 12 page PDF and a two week wait for an email reply will feel a lot worse. Residents won't compare your program to other state programs. They'll compare it to America.gov. They'll expect:
- One place to start, not five websites and three phone numbers
- Plain language answers about eligibility, documents and timing
- One application, with documents uploaded once
- A clear status and next step, without calling to ask
At Everblue, we've been saying this for years. Now the federal government is saying it too.
Your Residents Don't Have To Wait Until 2027
State programs can deliver this experience today. Everblue doesn't just advise on state programs. We implement them. For New Hampshire's Home Energy Rebates, we're the implementer of record, from the resident's first click to the final rebate. Our software gives residents one place to learn, apply and track their progress, and gives agencies the reporting they need.
