In early 2021, top executives at Eversource Energy, a Connecticut-based utility provider, approached me about hosting a live, virtual event for their employees.

Launching a Company-Wide Innovation Event

The event, hosted on Airmeet, brought together employees from multiple locations and encouraged them to collaborate in teams. The goal was to spark new thinking and begin driving a cultural transformation across the organization.

Introducing the Sustainability Ideathon

Eversource’s first Sustainability Ideathon leveraged innovation thinking to position the company as a leader in sustainability. The initiative was designed to crowdsource ideas directly from employees and turn those ideas into actionable solutions.

Empowering Employees to Think Differently

During the event, participants were challenged to:

  • Open their minds and ask new questions
  • View problems from different perspectives
  • Brainstorm creative solutions
  • Collaborate as a team
  • Pitch their ideas to a panel of judges

This structured approach helped employees move beyond day-to-day responsibilities and engage in meaningful innovation.

Driving Sustainable Innovation Forward

“We believe that addressing the impact of our carbon footprint will require innovative solutions,” said Jeffrey Kotkin, Eversource vice president. “That’s why we are collaborating with industry partners and engaging our employees to develop solutions.”

The Sustainability Ideathon marked an important step toward embedding innovation into Eversource’s culture and advancing its sustainability goals.
